Equine (Horse)-assisted therapy is an internationally recognized intervention, known to be especially effective in helping people work through trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, behaviour regulation and coping skills. Horses have a unique ability to provide an unfiltered and instant reflection of our true self and a platform from which to rebuild trust, boundaries, and clear communication skills.
THERE IS NO HORSE RIDING INVOLVED. STAND’s HIGH-RISK YOUTH EQUINE PROGRAM works to support and empower young people from severely impoverished and gang-ridden communities to cope with their environments, negative influences, poverty stressors, and help them make healthier choices.
STAND’S RECONNECT EQUINE PROGRAM provides sexual abuse survivors with the opportunity to debrief their trauma and begin the process of healing and self-discovery. RECONNECT works to move victims through the trauma of rape and sexual abuse and to regain a sense of safety and trust, and to restore feelings of control and power in survivors’ lives.
The survivors themselves are active partners in setting treatment goals and making decisions about how to go about achieving them while promoting the belief that it is possible to not only overcome trauma but also to thrive and reclaim joy.
